Dear Woman of Passion,
Some years ago there was a commercial that promoted a bath product called “Calgon”. Some of you may remember the chorus, “Calgon, take me away!” It was an appeal for escape from the responsibilities and pressures life can hold. Though we know “Calgon” cannot remove the strains of life, we may not realize how effecting “thoughts” have on life.
You see, feelings start with “thoughts”, and the “thoughts” you entertain determine your relief or burden. Throughout the day, uninvited “thoughts” come to mind. Some “thoughts” are God inspired, others are your own mental notes, but then there are ridiculous, random “thoughts” and suggestions that the devil speaks in your ear to distract, dissuade and dampen the God given vision within you.
Ignoring the “thought(s)” is not always the answer, especially if it’s a recurring “thought”. The only way you will prevail in your thinking is when you exercise the authority God has given to you. “Thoughts” may come but you decide whether to brood over them or to dismiss them out of hand. Know this however, whatever you keep on your mind is what you empower in your life.
Psalm 91:5 calls those fleeting “thoughts” “arrows that fly by day”, and Ephesians defines them as “fiery darts of the wicked one.” In and of themselves, “thoughts” are powerless, but given attention, they become exaggerated and imposing, thus, producing unfounded feelings designed to confuse, deter and ultimately destroy you.
You don’t have to let your thoughts dictate your reality. You are a woman of passion! Use your shield of faith to quench those fiery darts of the enemy (Ephesians 6:16) by speaking over the thought. For instance, if the enemy plants a thought like, “You’re gonna die today.” Well, you know that is not from God, nor is it His will for you to die. (You’ll know His will by His Word. In this case, Psalm 118:17.) So, speak! “I shall not die but live to declare the works of God.” Your faith is released by the words of your mouth and you are authorized to have what you say through Jesus Himself.
We must use the shield of faith in order to quench those fiery darts, so don’t fear, don’t ignore and don’t pander to the thought, overthrow them with your words. True victory in our thought life comes from knowing what to think on, (“think on things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, anything of good report and virtue or everything praiseworthy”Philippians 4:8) and knowing that we have the ability to bring “every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).
Again, thoughts may come, but you don’t have to give power to them. Think of it like this, you cannot stop a bird from flying over your head, but you can stop it from making a nest in your hair!
Don’t let the darts pierce or penetrate you! You’re a woman of passion, purpose and priority making the day count!
